Ways to be Happy and Healthy at Old Age

 

Old age is a time when you sit back and enjoy your life. You are much wiser; people’s opinions do not fluster you. You are much more comfortable with yourself. Your kids left home and you have all the reasons to do the things you want to do. Enjoying your life allows you to healthy aging.

 

It is completely understandable why you might feel lonely as you get older. Old friends and work acquaintances have left town. Even worse, many people close to you could have passed away. There are a few ways that Keep Older Adults Happy and healthy

 

  1. Exercise

 

Exercise and physical well-being are a great place to start. Exercising lifts your spirit and energy levels make you feel better. While exercising your body releases endorphins also known as feel-good hormones. If you have not been exercising before, it is not too late to start with light workouts into your routine. Even if you did not exercise before, this reduces your chance of getting disabled by 25 percent.

 

Exercise also helps get relief from chronic pain conditions like arthritis. It helps in maintaining weight. It also prevents from developing diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Improves our metabolism, lowers blood pressure and strengthens our immune system. Before joining any exercise program please consult your doctor.

 

  1. What you eat

 

Although your body is experiencing some changes, mealtimes can still be fun. Try to eat with your loved ones to avoid feeling lonely. Also, make an effort to ensure your food is tasty and well presented. This will trigger your senses and improve your appetite. Drink plenty of water to go on a high-fiber diet. Water is also suitable for healthy skin. Your diet should be as per your healthcare provider’s instructions.

 

  1. Join Support Group 

 

When a change occurs as it usually will, you will need a reliable support system. It could be due to a recent loss or a diagnosis. Work through your emotions by talking about them. Listen to the people who have experienced similar situations. This relaxes your soul and helps you heal.

 

The knowledge of the suffering will make you feel less alone. Consult a health professional if you are feeling depressed. This can be treated with medication and psychotherapy; thus, improving your physical health. Disability indeed makes us feel depressed, the inverse is also true (depression can lead to disability). That’s why it is important to always reach out to someone and talk about your suffering.

 

  1. Look after your Appearance

 

Because you are advancing in years should not mean that you can’t do it in style. When you look good, you feel even better. Wear sunscreen when you go out into the sun to protect your skin, drink plenty of water. Get a neat haircut or try to change your hair color. Dark hair color makes your features look severe while a lighter skin tone softens them. Looking good will boost your confidence and fuel your purpose.

 

  1. Laughter is the best medicine

 

Laughing lowers the stress hormone cortisol. As per the study done in 2014, 20 minutes spent watching funny videos helps improve the memory in seniors. Some researchers proven happiness lowers the risk of heart illness. So, laugh as much as you can because laughter is the best medicine.

 

6. Explore Things Around You

 

To avoid social isolation and improve your health and well-being: get out of your home. See more things where you are. You might get out to a local park or shopping center. Anything that connects you to the people around you is always worthwhile. Even the smallest social experience can make a big difference. Think about the places you wish to explore and see how you can go there. You should also think about any activities that you might interest you travel to a new place.

 

7.     Be More Creative

 

A creative person is one who thinks about the many great things one can do. Consider yourself more creative in your life too. You could attend an art or music class where you can learn how to play an instrument or artwork. You could attend a writing class. Where you can learn from a professional writer about how to produce your narrative work of art. Being creative allows you to challenge yourself to think more. What can be done when you try to produce appealing works of art. You can do anything you wish to if you put your mind to it.

 

8. Volunteer for work near your place

 

One of the best ways for the people to make the most out of their lives is by looking into great volunteer opportunities. These are events where people can go out. And assist other peoples to organize special events in a community. It could be working at the polling station during an election. Planning a parade or other community celebration. Cleaning up an area in the neighborhood, many volunteer opportunities abound. You can bring your talents and efforts out to help with anything.

 

As you start helping other people, you find it’s easier to enjoy life as you help people in many ways. You will find satisfaction in assisting others to make your community a little happier. You can meet different people during your volunteer works. You can meet other people, who also have the interest to serve their community. The social and emotional benefits you get by volunteering your time. And effort in your community is always ideal.

 

 

 

 

9. Learn to cope with change

As you age, there will be periods of both joy and stress. It’s important to build your resilience and find healthy ways to cope with challenges. This helps you make the most of the good times and keep your viewpoint during tough times. Concentrate on the things that you are thankful for. Acknowledge and express your feelings with your loved ones. Accept the things you can’t change. And focus on the things you can control such as the way you choose to react to problems. Take daily action to deal with life’s challenges by taking a small step at a time. Even a small step boosts your confidence and reminds that you are not powerless.

Depressing feeling, as well as psychological well-being, should not be a burden as you age. Use the points you have read about here. You will find it is not too hard for you to feel better about yourself and where you are going with your life. Dealing with old age always helps as you look to stay confident and comfortable with your life.

Social Distancing

Social Distancing

 

Social distancing is about creating physical distance between people. Social distancing is most effective when considered as a social health strategy. Wherein people think about how they can limit their own social interactions. At the community level closing schools, workplaces and events cancellation with large gatherings. We need to take social distancing very seriously. Avoid any unnecessary risks that would put us in close contact with groups of other people.

A few ground rules will be more helpful. Ask yourself: Am I going to be closer than 1 meter (3 feet) of someone else at any time? Am I going to be touching objects that are not cleaned or that other people touch? In these times, we all should limit close contact, to family members only. This means no marriage parties, no office parties, no birthday parties even with a few friends. Here are some ideas, these might help you to maintain social distancing

 

Stay at Home

Please don’t leave your home unless it’snecessary. Don’t socialize with people outside your family. During a stay at hometime, you should go outside only for essentials. To pick up groceries or medicines — but you should limit those trips to no more than once a week if possible. Essential service providers medical,police, sanitation and grocery worker can go to work.

There is a bright spot. In most cases, a stay at home time allows you to walk the dog or exercise outside (for brief periods). If you keep a 1-meter (3 feet) distance from others. Avoid any face to face contact for some time, even with your near ones in the family.

 

Self-Examining

Self-examining is for them who learn they might have exposure to the virus. They could have had only distant contact with the infected person. Check your temperature on regular intervals and look for signs of coronavirus infection. Including fever, shortness of breath, sore throat and dry coughing. A person self-examining should already be staying home and limiting interactions with others. If you develop shortness of breath, sore throat and dry coughing. Seek medical advice promptly as this may be due to infection.

Self-Quarantine

This is to separate and restrict the movement of someone who is well. But who recently had close contact with a person who was later diagnosed with the virus. A person in self-quarantine should follow all the rules of stay at home. They should avoid going to shops or interacting with the public. Even on a limited basis during a 14-day period. A person should sleep in a separate space from other family members.

Self-Isolation

Isolation is to separate a person who has a diagnosed case or someone who has distinct symptoms. These include shortness of breath, sore throat and dry coughing. But hasn’t yet tested or received test results. Everyone else in the household should self-quarantine. A person in isolation should confine to a separate room. With no contact with the rest of the house this includes pets (if any). He or she can pick food from the door provided by the family or caregiver. And use a separate bathroom if possible or sanitize a shared bathroom after using it. Chances are a sick person might feel a bit miserable.

Mandatory Quarantine

A government-imposed lockdown on a community. This has happened in many countries, in which movements are severelyrestricted. People can still go out for essentials services. They can do so only under strict conditions. Specific schedule imposed by public safety officials should be following. Everyone who lives in an area under quarantine should follow the instruction.

 

We can fight this by regular and thorough cleaning of our hands. With an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Washing our hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on our hands. It’s not just about you, it’s about realizing that we all have a part to play in keeping others healthy.

I Hurt Myself by Loving you!

I am lying in a bed beside her and staring her sleeping face with mixed feelings. This is the first time any girl decided to stay back in my lonely flat where I am preparing for UPSC. My mind is flooded with intense care for her which has encouraged me to provide emotional, financial and all kinds of study related support to her. I have started enjoying her company. In less than 2 months my sympathy turned into a love for her.
Today, she has come to my flat again, I am excited!! She is sitting in front of me. I ask her,
 ”Shall I express my feeling of love”,
” You want to say this to me?”, she asks.
 “Yes”, I nodded.
“I have no such feelings for you”, She replies dryly. Shocked!, I burst into tears. She stops me from crying. I ask her to give her hand into mine, she gives and hugs me tightly. I am becoming more emotional.
After dropping her to the nearest metro station, I got back to my room and cried. I sent a text to her about the pain and my desperation for her. Inside I am feeling rejected. The disrespect and rudeness from her broke my heart. It’s been 4 days of sleepless nights, I am lying in my bed looking out of the window, glaring the half Moon, wondering if God can make me come out of this misery.

Stress Relief Strategies

Burnout takes a toll on people who are trying to do good work in the world. I have seen people didn’t have time to go to the bathroom while they are working. There are times when we don’t eat, ate late in the day, or ignore our personal needs in favour of our work. The way we work gets broken when talented people are not able to attend to their basic human needs. Until the larger systemic issues fixed. These stories create stress-relief strategies to incorporate in our hectic day. Here are few such strategies to try when you have less time.

  1. Password change exercise :-

This technique is a form of preparing – creating cues in our environment to prompt us to act in a certain way. We can use this specific password change technique to start our day smiling. I changed my password to Life1sbe@utiful, and it worked. My next password was Enjoy@moments, and it helped me enjoy small moments of life. Think about how many times you enter a password during a day. Make your password express something which will help you create a positive environment.

 

  1. Hug someone

Hugs are so important that there is a Hug day which falls on – January 21, since 1986. Give Someone a Hug every day. Hugs are a good source to relieve stress. Hugging someone allows you to release oxytocin. A hormone that promotes pro-social behaviour, contribute to relaxation, trust and compassion. Dr Paul Zak says at least 8 hugs a day allows us to maintain a strong relationship. If you feel weird about hugging your colleagues at work, then save those hugs for friends and family.

 

  1. Pet an animal :-

More people are recognizing the impact of petting an animal has on reducing their stress. As we burned out, our panic attacks increase. And we stop exercising because a fast-beating heart causes our brain to trigger panic. To help, we should spend time with our retriever pet. Petting animals increase our levels of serotonin, dopamine, neurotransmitters that have calming properties.

 

  1. Try 6-3-8 breathing

Many busy professionals share they don’t have enough time to practice meditation. This is the closest thing I’ve been able to do, and it has helped me relax in many stressful situations. If you have a focus problem or having a knee-jerk reaction to stress-producing events. You can try this breathing technique. You can do while sitting in a chair or on the floor with a straight back. Breathe in for a count of 6, hold your breath for a count of 3, then exhale for a count of 8. Repeat this five times and increase the same over a while.

 

  1. Savour something

Savouring involves consciously engaging with our thoughts or behaviour. This heightens the effects of positive events or positive emotions. Look forward to a positive event. Extend the enjoyment of the current happy experience. And revisit a past event to restore a positive feeling. Did you able to finish assigned work on time? Think and share about it! Are you looking forward to an outing planned with your loved ones? Take a few moments and think about the happiness you will get from this outing.

 

  1. Smile:-

Emotions are very contagious in our life. We may not feel happy at our workplace or going through a tough time in your life. Smiling not only makes us feel better, but we’ll also give a signal to others that we want to stay connected.

 

  1. Brain dispose of :-

Counterproductive thoughts and emotions build up throughout the day. This could be a feeling of anger towards a friend. Anxiety about missing an important work deadline, or disappointment upon not receiving promotion. All these need to be in our brain. Our worst-case scenario thinking won’t get better until we dispose of it from our head. It’s amazing how different a problem looks when we put it on paper. Put all your thoughts on the paper and you will feel relaxed after this exercise.

 

  1. Create your PERMA:-

Dr Martin Seligman’s theory of thriving known by five elements with the acronym PERMA. PERMA defined as Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishments.

  • Positive emotions – feeling good
  • Engagement – being completely absorbed in activities
  • Relationships – being genuinely connected to others
  • Meaning – purposeful existence
  • Accomplishments – a sense of accomplishment and success

We can incorporate PERMA model in our life by finding the things that make us happy. We can get engaged in the activities which brings us happiness. We can even put goals to challenge ourselves in the activities we enjoy. Focus on the relationships with family and friends and find ways to connect with others. Even if it does not come naturally at first. Find the meaning to life and what gives a sense of purpose. It’s going to be different for everyone.

 

  1. Mental game :-

Our brain notices and remembers negative events and information. It’s called negativity bias. If you’re having a stressful day in your routine. Chances are your brain will re-visit stressful events after the stress has passed. Mental games are fun and easy brain activities to help you lessen confusion. You can recite your favourite song lyrics. This can also try by creating a sentence where every word must begin with the same letter. Starting with “A.” For example, “All angles are awesome.” Then go onto “B.” “Bose buy big boat.” This can be continuing with the next alphabet until you can make sentences. You can also use this when you are not able to sleep at night.

Pick the strategies that echo most with you on this list and try incorporating into your routine. Finding the best stress relief strategy which suits you may take some time. Some strategies may take extra practice too. It’s important to keep looking for the tools that help you manage life’s unavoidable ups and down with good health. Keeping stress at a manageable level is important for our well-being.

Rather than choosing one technique. We recommend sampling several to see which one works best for you. Try to practice at least a few minutes a day, although even a few minutes can help. But the longer and the more often you practice these techniques. Greater the benefits and the more you can reduce stress. The world has evolved to such an extent that there are various careers to choose from. This has complicated the initial process of choosing a career. At a young age itself, we are being asked what we wish to be “when we grow up,”. Career planning is important for several reasons.

A career development plan in place reduces our risk of making impulsive decisions. And helps us recognize when we are ready to look for new opportunities and develop new skills. Unlike our previous generations used to do. Nowadays many people don’t take up the job immediately after high school and college. And then stick with it until retirement. We get inspired to find our “career path”—whatever that means—and follow it. Great, but where do we even start with. Here are some ideas, this might help you to make a choice.

  1. Assess Yourself

Before we can choose the right career, we must learn about ourselves. Our values, interests, skills, and aptitudes, in combination with our personality type. This allows us to identify some occupations, a good fit for us. Other occupations could be completely inappropriate. Self-assessment tools and career tests help us to gather information about our traits. These tools allow us to generate a list of occupations which is a good fit based on them. Another option available is to consult a career counsellor or career development professionals. Professionals can help us to navigate this process.

  1. Occupations List and Exploration

We have many occupations in front of us at a point. One of which could have been by self-assessment tools used by us. To keep ourselves organized, we should combine them into one master list. First, we should highlight careers that appear on many lists and copy them onto a blank page. And mark it as “Occupations to Explore.” Our self-assessments ​indicated that they are a good fit for us based on several of our traits. We should explore them. Next, highlight occupations that appeal to us. These may be the careers we know a bit about and want to explore further. Also, we can add professions about which we don’t know much. We learn something unexpected. Through a job description and licensing requirements made available by concerned departments. Learn about advancement opportunities. The labour market information provided by the government can be useful. We come to know about the earnings for each profession of our interest.

  1. Take a test

Well, what if we don’t know what we’re good at or even what we’re interested in. Career assessment test helps us to narrow down a field of interest. If it’s been a while since we have taken those tests, there are other kinds of assessment tests we can take. There are many websites providing career test explore and take a test to know our interests. We can also find a career that fits our motivational focus on the assessment test. And though these tests may be helpful, they’re not the final to our career path.

  1. Internship

An internship is a great way to test out an industry or type of career. This eventually allows us to get a full-time job especially if we have no prior experience. There are chances that our internship doesn’t turn into a job or we may find out it’s the wrong career for us. Internship helps us build our network with the people. Through this network, we can get a career and job advice. Many companies are offering stipend during an internship.

  1. Find a mentor

A mentor could help us take our career to the next level and give us the insight to help us make sure we’re on the right path. Once we’ve secured a mentor, take advantage of everything they’re willing to offer. This could include advice, connections and answering questions about the industry. If there’s a career we’re interested in is being finalized. We can check if any of those companies or people in that line of work allow us to shadow them for a few days to see what it’s like.

  1. Make a career plan

As with most things, our career will benefit if we have goals and a plan to achieve those accordingly. we want to be in a particular industry, but the next goal after that is getting a certain position. Do we want to do that? Map out where we want to go, with concrete milestones.

  1. Steppingstone

Of course, all these plans and ideas are never set in stone. We should keep in mind that we may start very excited about a certain career, only to fall out of love with it later. More than anything, remember that our career is a lengthy journey, not a sprint. It could turn out to be a very twisting path. Knitted together from experiences into a career worth having.

Finally, don’t forget that career planning is a continuous process. We should revisit and review our aims and objectives throughout our career. And should not feel constrained by the goals set by us. The structure of a career plan should help us to map out the route, to trying something new. The more efforts we put into our search for the right career, the more we’ll get out of it. Invest time and effort because change like this is rarely easy, but often rewarding.

Saying them to another person also makes you consider what their view is? Meaning you can gain new ways of thinking about your problems.  Simply by letting them out. Similarly, keeping a diary or journal is a great help to many people. Seeing your problems written down on paper allows you to examine them from a distance. In some cases, worries or anxieties aren’t founded on any real cause for concern. What they thought was a very serious issue. In fact, nothing at all to worry about – this can be a huge relief.

 

  1. Emotional experience

Letting things out that you’ve been keeping inside can be an emotional experience. Absolving you of pent up emotions. As many people find they are relieved of thoughts or feelings that they’ve been bottling up. Such a release often feels like a weight off the mind. And allows people to begin to let go of feelings they’ve been holding on to.

 

  1. Confront feelings

Today we’re busier than we’ve ever been in the past. As our attention is pulled in every way possible from the moment we wake up until the moment we fall asleep. This means we can rarely afford the time to sit and process feelings of guilt, remorse, grief or sadness. Counselling means you dedicate some time to facing or confronting your issues.

Often people feel unable to share their feelings and issues with the people in their life. And quite often with those closest to them. Having someone who is a stranger, who doesn’t know you and won’t judge you. This gives you the freedom to talk about things you wouldn’t normally admit to your friends and family. This is hugely helpful in making people feel less alone and isolated in their suffering. Especially if you’ve had something on your mind that you’re too embarrassed to discuss with people who know you.

And you know that should anything come up, you have someone you can talk to about anything you’re worried about. People find that you can rely on someone to listen to your problems. Being able to focus on everyday life means people make positive changes in their life. Which, in turn, lifts their mood. Some even get back on the path to realizing their dreams.

How to make good friends

The essence of friendship is about care and respect. It has nothing to do with money, attractiveness, or “the cool factor.” A true friend is there for you, no matter what, and having such a person in your life is a great gift. Although your closest friends are your best buds, you must evaluate your relationships when you are ready to make a change for the better. Relationships are like elevators; they are either bringing you up or taking you down. Every connection isn’t meant for the long haul… sometimes we find ourselves holding on toxic relationships that expired years earlier. Therefore, it is so important to make the right relationship choices. For your long-term success, you simply must choose the right friends. Here are some secrets to doing so

1.    Be real 

People are turned off by those who are constantly trying to be someone they are not. We are most comfortable around others who are comfortable in their own skin. So just be yourself. Even though you aren’t perfect, the way you handle your strengths and faults with humility and confidence will permit other people to be real and relaxed with you, as well. Real friends are relaxed around each other.

2.    Be honest

Keep your promises and do what you say you’re going to do. Be reliable. Nobody wants to be friends with someone who lies. And lies always have a way of coming to the light. Also, friends will say the truth to one another, even when it’s hard. The wisest man in the Bible, King Solomon, said: Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

3.    Be a good listener.

Don’t watch television or text while your friend is sharing something with you. Most times people need more than good advice, they need someone to listen to them as they talk through their feelings. Ask them what’s going on in their life and how they feel.

4.    Keep their secrets

Prove yourself to be a trustworthy person who will guard their secrets with your life. A good way to prove you are trustworthy is to be free to share some of your secrets with your friend. King Solomon also said:  Friends come, and friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like family.

5.    Encourage your friend

Everyone needs encouragement. Find specific ways to encourage your friend. Even in the depths of their struggles, show them what you see to be special about them and be willing to pick them up when they are depressed or feel like life is pressing in on them from all sides.

6.    Be loyal to your friend

This is unconditional acceptance, even when your friend makes a mistake or screws up. Be there when they are experiencing their highest highs and their lowest lows. Laugh with them, cry with them, don’t just talk about always being there. Prove it in your everyday life!

7.    Be willing to work through conflict

Every relationship will hit a speed bump at one time or another. Show your friend you are willing to work through the difficult times of misunderstandings and hurt feelings. Sometimes friendships grow stronger through the difficult times. Don’t give up on your friend just because you are having difficulties.

8.    Watch out for your friend

When you see your friend getting into a dangerous situation whether it’s with drugs or alcohol, or maybe even a destructive relationship, be bold enough to step in and protect your friend from the harm you see coming their way.

It takes a lot of work and commitment to be a great friend. But it is worth it. Keep in mind there are people all around you who are looking for friends. So, continue developing good friends and your life will be far better for it. A good friend is a person who will help do something for you without expecting anything in return. A good friend will stand by you during good times and not-so-easy times. If you go through a painful event such as a divorce, they’ll stand by you, but many people lose friendships during these difficult times. In this case, ask yourself: “Were/are they really a good friend?”

As you can see, several qualities make a friend a good friend and set them apart from the rest. And, if you realize “you” could be a better friend, the good news is, it’s not too late.
